My adventures in the world of gardening...

Friday 20th May

I don't know why I even bother making plans! I haven't put the hanging baskets up yet, or made any teepees (although I'll blame that on not having any twine!)

I have:
  • Re-potted tomatoes (& moved to greenhouse)
  • Re-potted cucumbers (& moved to greenhouse)
  • Re-potted lettuces
  • Re-potted butternut squash
My peas & calabrese are coming on well and I think they'll need to be hardened off soon to go outside :o)

Sunday 15th May

I've been re-potting some plants today (and earthing up the potatoes again!) so we now have 3 more courgette plants outside (which all have baby courgettes on them) and a sweet potato plant.

I've been continuing to harden off my beans and I think they're probably ready to stay utside now so my next job is to build some teepees out of bamboo canes (10 for £1 from the poundshop!)

I also need to to re-pot the tomatoes, cucumber & lettuce so I can get them out in the greenhouse and I must put up the hanging baskets (although it is a little windy at the moment)

I wonder what size pots my Butternut Squashes need to go in?

Food (sort of)

I have a baby courgette on one of my plants! :-)

I had been wondering about how to tell the difference between male & female flowers and this is how I found out:
This is on one of the plants that was still inside so now it needs to be hardened off and go to live in the garden.

Wednesday 11th May

Been out in the garden again this evening :o)

Here's what I've been up to:

  • Re-potted Cayenne Chillies
  • Re-potted Bullet Chillies
  • Planted Perpetual Spinach
  • Planted Mixed Salad Leaves
  • Earthed up the potatoes

Really must get the hanging baskets up soon!

Herb Border

Meant to say on my last post...I'm planning a herb border

Our front garden has just had a spring cleaning and is looking a bit bare in the borders so I'm planning to grow herbs all down the side of the garden.

Just need to choose my herbs now.

Tuesday 10th May

It's been interesting weather here over the past few days.

Lovely sunny spells and then torrential showers. I had to run outside yesterday evening to quickly put my courgettes & french bean plants in the garage to stop them being drowned!

Last few days I have been:

  • Hardening off more courgettes
  • Hardening off french beans
  • Earthing up the potatoes (again)
  • Sown peas
  • Sown Broccoli (Calabrese)
  • Repotted some peppers

I've bought some more pots...I'm really going to have stop buying them though as I'm going to run out of space. I've also bought 2 hanging baskets, going to have strawberries in one and tumbling toms in the other :o)

Friday 6th May

Jobs for today:

  • Hardening off my Courgettes
  • Earthing up the Potatoes
  • Prepping pots for Perpetual Spinach, Baby Carrots & Spring Onions
  • Move my Peppers to the greenhouse

My courgettes have already started flowering (I'm a little surprised...wasn't expecting that for a while), wonder how long it'll be before I get some food to eat.

I'm also pretty impressed with how fast my potatoes are growing...they need earthing up again today (only did it a couple of days ago!)

Keeping A Record

I thought it might be a good idea if I kept a record of my veggie growing as a good learning experience for next year.

A bit of an intro then...I'm Jenny and I'm growing my own veg (and fruit!). I don't have room for an acutal veggie patch yet (I'll definitely have one when the garden's be reorganised though!) so, for the moment, I'm growing all my plants in containers.

I've also put my name on the waiting list for an allotment (so I might get one in a couple of years!)
